SINGAPORE BUCKS
This year is Bucks RFC’s 40th Anniversary, and we are excited to visit the scenic shores of Phuket for another year of the Phuket 10’s. This year we bring over a 35 tourist strong party, and once again look forward to competing in the inaugural Phuket 10’s.
Some of the regular faces will again be appearing, Schlonger (who was born the same year as Bucks) Bomber (who is older than Bucks), JB and Nicko. Also this year we have a group of new tourists, who will venture on to the streets of Patong to experience the wonderful hospitality of Phuket.
2007 promises to be an exciting year for Bucks RFC, with the Phuket 10’s being one of the highlights, and both Bucks I’s and II’s, along with the VAGABUCKS (a mixture of players from the Vagabonds RFC and Bucks RFC) promise to put up a spirited effort on, and, of course, off the pitch.
Many thanks and congratulations must go to the committee and organizers of the Phuket 10’s for continuing the great tradition of rugby, and for once again, organizing an excellent tournament.
Tour Motto – “TONIGHT, WE DINE IN SOI BANGLA”
MOORABBIN
RAMS
The Moorabbin Rams have been regular competitors at
the Phuket 10s since it's inaugural year.
Whilst most
players in tour party come from our local club in
Melbourne, we are always pleased to include our very
dear homesick pals from Hong Kong, Bali and Europe who
come together annually for this tour. Over the years
we
have managed to win some silverware and this year we
are again determined to take some home. We trust the
rugby won't get in the way of enjoying ourselves
amongst good friends and good food.
Despite Arv's
efforts we hope to arrive in the correct place wearing
the correct attire at the correct time!. Our trademark
recovery sessions will be led by our very own Gazza
and those willing to brave exercise are welcome to
join in! Don't be surprised if you see the
Rams have a Coffin Dodgers
team in this year's Tournament as we finally
realise that we are growing
old disgracefully.
DUBAI DRAGONS
“Dubai Dragons RFC are returning to Phuket for the third time in as many years. Dubai’s premier social team are as handy on the pitch as they are off it having lifted the Arabian Gulf Sevens (Dubai 7’s) trophy in consecutive seasons. This year’s squad represents the perfect blend of experience, dexterity and boyish exuberance necessary to succeed on a Phuket tour. With players hailing from 6 countries (including Germany and Spain) the side will look to Shane Thornton and Sean Hurley, coach and captain of the Arabian Gulf national team respectively, for inspiration and will benefit immensely from the experience of Abu Dhabi Dan in the bar. The Dragons would like to take this opportunity to wish all teams competing the best of luck for the tournament.”
THONBURI UNIVERSITY
Thonburi University Rugby Club is now in it's third year and developing well. Back for their second year at the Phuket tens and hoping to improve on last years result. Thonburi were a huge revelation in Thai Rugby last year by winning the 3rd Division University League. Most the players have only been playing rugby for 3 years and hope a successful
tournament will be a good building block to improve on last years results in the TRU league.
KRIEL ROOSTERS
Kriel rugby club was establishing in 1975. The name Kriel is original from French, meaning a specific rooster in France.
The Kriel community exists mainly from workers in the two coal mines and power stations. Currently there are 6,000 families in Kriel, where most of the men work a three shift cycle. Because of the different working shifts it is sometimes very difficult for the Rooster players to practice properly.
Kriel 1st team in 15 man rugby, ended second in their league during 2009 after a thriller of a match. We lost the cup in the dying seconds of the match with two points after leading from beginning to end.
During 2008 the Roosters went to Phuket after the 10’s competition took place, just to see what is 10’s about and enjoy Phuket so much that they decide to go back in 2009 for the real thing.
The Roosters surprised everybody and won the plate final as well as the floating trophy for best touring team 2009.
Our club is mainly financially run by the managing team and their sponsors. Because of high cost to Phuket the management originally decided not to participate in this year’s competition. During November 2009 the players start putting pressure on management to take them again to this magnificent tournament. After hard working, having functions, late nights and getting the amount of 1,700,000 Thai Bath are we again in Phuket to show our Rooster skills.
It is very sad to mention that we have lost one of our most promising young players, Jaco de Jager, due to a motor cycle accident. He passed away four weeks before our Phuket trip. His twin brother Christoff is accompanying us as a player.
The Roosters aim for this year is to be competitive and to enjoy this tour to the full extents.
QANTAS KOALAS
The Qantas Supply and Transport Social Club Football Club was formed in 1967, making 2007 the club's 40th year. Basically a social Rugby club, contested amongst the airlines of the world and in fact any interested team looking for a game. As the name suggests most of the players were originally from the stores, purchasing and supply and transport departments within Qantas with some ground engineers also participating.
The club's first President was Mr. Barry Blackwood who served in this capacity until 1987. The club started as basically a Rugby League team playing in the local business house competition in Sydney's Domain area. It was soon discovered though that most overseas competition played Rugby Union and the club's main impetus was soon directed towards this end. The highlight of early competition was an annual match against Air New Zealand for what was known as the 'Brasko Trophy' - a toilet seat mounted upon a wooden shield. Competition for this plaque is always hotly contested with the score between the two sides fairly equal.
The expansion of the club into a more international airline playing arena saw a change in the club's name to the Qantas Rugby Club with the team travelling to countries like France, England, Ireland, Malaya, Hong Kong, Singapore, Philippines and Fiji. Other Airlines and social club's also visited Australia to participate in matches, for example the Ocean Liner 'QE2" was an interesting match with its team consisting wholly of crew members from that ship.
1982 saw a major tour of England and Ireland, playing Air Lingus in Dublin comming away with a hard fought draw and wining the game against British Airways in London. The highlights of the trip was the first class tour of the Guiness Brewery in Ireland and the Prince of Teck Pub in Earls Court.
A tour of Hawaii in 1986 saw the Qantas Rugby side beat a very determined Hawaiian Harlequins side and a great visit to a top venue was enjoyed by all who participated. In 1987 Mr. Harry Jones took over as club President.
1988 was Australia's Bi-centennial year and to join in the occasion, the Qantas Rugby Club inaugurated an Asia-Pacific Airlines seven-a-side Rugby Tournament. A total of sixteen teams participated from countries like New Guinea, Japan, New Zealand and Malaya, In 1989 the Qantas Rugby Club visited Argentina for a very busy, four match tournament. A hectic tour to a beautiful country of very hospitable people. The tour for 1990 was to Canada and this was contested against one of the Vancouver local sides. A loss - but well worth it for the opportunity to visit this magnificent country.
The Club's name was changed in 1990 to the 'Qantas Rugby Association'. This was to facilitate the participation by club members in non rugby activities like touch football and competitive swimming.
The club Presidency changed again in August of 1992 with Mr. Rob McGregor now occupying that chair. Over the past decade the club has been back to Hawaii, 2 tours of Papua New Ginnea, South Africa and back to Fiji in 1991, to play matches against Air Pacific and one of the local villages in Sigatoka.
During the 90's the Rugby playing Aviation Countries, have banded together to form the World Aviation Rugby Tournament (WART). Played Bi-annually the tournaments are hosted by various members. Previous competitions have been held in Shannon, Ireland 96, Johannesburg, South Africa 98, Rotorua, New Zealand 2000, France 2002 and South Africa again in 2004. The club has regular tours to Fiji, to support local rugby teams and communities by way of playing jumpers and rugby apparel.
Although the club operates under the Qantas banner, it operates independently. The rugby club relies on sponsors to operate successfully. At present, the Qantas Rugby Club has associate sponsors and is looking for a major sponsor with product exposure on several pages on both of the Rugby Club's web and Intranet sites and jumber advertising.
Sponsors in the past have been the Harp Irish Pub at Tempe, Home Makers Supa Centa More Park, Rolls Royce, General Electric and Jack Hawkins and Sons Pty. Ltd. (construction) to just name a few.
Hales Redden and Partners have for many years supported the club by way of financial audits which is a requirement of Qantas Airways and the Department of Fair Trading.
Current Sponsors include St George Rowers, Hales Redden and Partners and Qantas Airways
BANGKOK GOOSERS
The Bangkok Goosers were conceived last year at the Pattaya Tens on a British Club goosing expedition down walking street. We are mainly ex-players from the British Club and Thonburi University tired of the rigidity of the colonial structures of the British Club. We have come together with an emphasis on entertainment both on and off the field. Playing free flowing champagne rugby and out on the goosing trail with our thumbs up.
THAI LEGENDS RFC
According to an old saying goes in the UK, "Rugby is a ruffian's game played by gentlemen", a group of talented rugby men brought together players to form a team called “Thai Babarians” since year 2003. At that time, they had no ground or clubhouse, yet their outstanding talents have followed in their footsteps. For almost 6 years, the Thai Babarians have proved such an outstanding success, both with an excellence of the rugby on the field, and in achieving their aim that the Thai Barbarians have since been privileged with the honour of playing in both Thailand and Southeast Asia.
Up till now, the Thai Babarians are strong under an efficient management team. Because there are many young blood rugby men who would like to have a chance to play with the founders of the Thai Babarians who become their “idol”, the “Thai Lengend” is started.
SAN MIGUEL WANDERERS - SINGAPORE
Fresh from retaining our Singapore Rugby Premiership crown, the Singapore Wanderers are back in Phuket for the 10th year running and looking forward to another Andaman Adventure. With a huge squad built of the principles of “quantity not quality” we will be fielding 2 sides in the main competition this year and are hoping to build on our less than impressive on-field performance from last year.
Off the field is a whole other matter and once again we will be taking Patong by storm with a touring party in excess of 50, including the senior guys and a host of “social” tourists.
So don’t stand still for too or you might end up getting tattooed with the famous running man. You have been warned!
San Miguel Wanderer's RFC was formed in 1995 and since then has developed into one of Singapore’s leading sporting and social networks. Founded by a select band of gentlemen rugby players the club has grown substantially in the past 13 years but has remained true to its roots as a place where everyone is welcome regardless of age, gender, race or religion.
We can boast that we have had some considerable success in the local rugby scene during our short history and whilst we don't necessarily have the best players, but we seem to be able to attract like-minded people who can enjoy rugby competitively on the field with a healthy social scene off the field.
BEDOK KINGS RFC
Veteran Ian "Rambo" Slack has survived many harrowing ordeals in his lifetime and has since withdrawn into a simple and secluded existence in Singapore, where he spends his time capturing snakes for local entertainers. Even though he is looking to avoid trouble, trouble has a way of finding him: a group of Bedok Kings human rights missionaries, led by Dr Bob Glover, Old man Willie and Scoobs (It's my 40th) along with an alarming number of virgins, approach him to make one more trip to the Karon Stadium and the hell of Soh Bangla. Slacky, though somewhat decrepit, accepts the offer and takes the team up the river (ooh vicar!) one last time. When the team finally arrive at the Karon Stadium, they find themselves part of a raid by the sadistic Suzie Wong and her henchman Phuket Pat!.
Who knows whether the Bedok Kings will survive the Karon massacre but we know they will confront the challenges beer in hand!
Bedok will be entering both the old gits and open competitions once again. We would like to wish Pat and all the other teams all the very best for the forthcoming tournament and looking forward to supporting the ACF on and off the park. It's good to be a King!

PIGS RUGBY: IT’S ALL ABOUT THE FATNESS

Diet is an essential part of any fitness programme. The more fatty, junk foods you eat the heavier you become. This means that when you go for a jog you are carrying more weight and need to use more energy and power to get around. The more you weigh the stronger your legs muscles need to be to carry you around. Everyone knows that leg muscle strength is crucial in rugby. So do not just sit there and do nothing …. eat something. |
|
Medical experts recognise that alcohol makes you feel stronger and more confident. A confident player will always have that extra edge on the pitch so a few bottles of beer are always recommended before playing. An additional benefit is that alcohol helps numb pain so allows a player to last the full ten minutes being unaware of minor injuries such as a broken collar bone or dislocated elbow. |
|
Performance-enhancing and other recreational drugs are strongly recommended as amateur players never get tested. However, please ensure that these are wholly legal in the jurisdiction in which you are playing as Asian nations take a very dim view of illegal drugs. |
|
Get a training partner or join a fitness group. A problem shared is a problem halved. Team up with a mate and alternate your training; you train one month for yourself and him and he trains the next month as payback to you. This saves a lot of time and effort. If you form a group even more time is saved. |
|
Professional players always tell us that rest is a key part of their fitness programme. If it works for professional players it will work for you. Ensure that rest is a key component of your fitness programme. Make sure you get plenty of rest but do not sit around doing nothing …. you should be eating the appropriate foods to increase you leg muscle strength as noted above. |
|
In fact the key to fitness is to maximise your efforts at all times. Do not tire yourself out before a game with silly warm up exercises ... it is 35 degrees centigrade out there. Have a cold beer and a Thai beef salad just before the game … that extra weight could make all the difference in the scrums. Similarly, never ever continue to run after the referee’s whistle has gone for an infringement. Conserve your energy at all times and walk to the next scrum or line out. This way you will find you have more energy left for any night training you may be contemplating. |
COFFIN DODGERS COMPETITION
PHUKET VIAGRABONDS
Viagrabonds rugby has gone from strength to strength this year with exceptional growth rate among players & supporters alike. With players coming from all walks of life & corners of the globe the Viagrabonds exploded onto the Bangkok scene earlier in the year with a win in the BKK 10's Shield final which was a fitting climax to the season. Being the home side we will again be gorging ourselves both on and off the park !!
Viagrabonds Rugby......harder than Chinese math ......!!
HONG KONG FOOTBALL CLUB OLD BULLS
The Old Bulls of the Hong Kong Football Club are pleased to make their second appearance in the Phuket 10’s Coffin Dodgers Tournament. Whilst not technically an over-35 team, the Bulls are blessed with an abundance of aged but wise men. Much like the story of the virile young bull and equally virile but wiser old bull, the HKFC Bulls are well aware that nothing interferes with a rugby tour in tropical paradise so much as actually having to play more than a few minutes of rugby, and so we look forward to sharing the pitch on Friday with our fellow Coffin Dodgers and subsequently doing our best to prop up the local economy.
ASIAN JAPANESE DRAGONS
“Asian Japanese Dragons” is mixed Japanese team that players from all over Asia. Phuket 10’s is the biggest event for Japanese player in middle of the year and it is good opportunities to play together with the member who play for opponent team on our big competition “Asian Japanese Rugby Cup” ends of every year. THE OLD BANGKOK BANGERS
The Old Bangkok Bangers Old Boys Team return to one of our favourite tour destinations on the sunny Island of Phuket once again and are joyfull at the prospect of the rugby and festivities ahead. 3 of our old farts recently made the trip by bicycle raising 250,000 Baht for the Tournament Charity of the Asian Center Foundation.
Previous tours have become the stuff of folklore and legend and we are sure to add new tales of adventure on this trip especially in the fancy dress stakes which have once again been arranged by our trusty Ancients Captain, Foxy. On the field we are just pleased to be here but will still aim to bring home a trophy (anybodies trophy!) but will be most pleased to retain the mighty Weasel Cup against our old friends and hosts the Viagrabonds.
With many of our salty old sea dogs playing in both tournaments you can be sure to smell us before you see us on the Saturday and we hope that this tactic will help come scrum time. If you see us over the weekend be sure to join us for beer and if you are over 50 why not have a run with our Ancients just to prove that you still can!

COTTESLOE PIRATES
"The best vista of any sporting club in the world" is how one supporter recently described the location of the Cottesloe Rugby Union Club. Perched high above the Seaview Golf Course it takes in a stunning view across Cottesloe's beaches, the Port of Fremantle and the landmark pines of Forrest Street as it tumbles down to the Indian Ocean.
Cottesloe is the oldest rugby club in WA, established on Cottesloe Oval in 1893. The team was originally known as the Cottesloe 'Pirates' and donned a black jersey with an intimidating insignia of skull and crossbones over the left breast.
Although the 'Pirates', who fielded just one senior team in their initial years, disbanded in 1923, their fierce passion lives on in two shades of blue. Now known simply as "Cottesloe", the club boasts a membership of 240 playing members.
Currently the club has a strong contingent represented in five senior teams a Golden Oldies team – the Olde Gulls - and a women's side while an established junior program fields 9 junior sides.
"Cottesloe has a very large contingent of juniors playing in 9 junior sides. Over 100 kids come down and train on Thursday nights. It looks like a mob of ants down there. We have a sausage sizzle on the top for the parents and on balmy evenings with a cold drink in your hand it is like a big picnic," said past President Milton Hunt.
Cottesloe has also contributed 62 former players and members to refereeing ranks. "It means we reserve the right to bag the referees," he jokes with tongue firmly in cheek.
The Club has been successful in winning eight First Grade Premierships, the most recent in 2001. It has not however, always been smooth sailing. During World War II, for example, 90 percent of members served in the armed forces, at which time the Club briefly disbanded to amalgamate with Perth. They reformed again and returned to Cottesloe in 1947 but by 1961 the club's membership had dwindled to 20, debts had reached an astronomical level, and spirit was at an all time low. The Club persevered and now ranks as one of WA’s rugby powerhouses.
The club is open to all those who share a love of the game, not just for those who live in Cottesloe, but those who want to experience the enthusiasm and tradition.
"Cottesloe was there first and will be the last to go. Traditions, such as that we have established, never die
JAGERMEISTER WANDERERS WRINKLIES
The Wanderers Wrinklies return for a 3rd year and are determined to consign last year’s crushing final defeat to history and bring home the cup this time around. Once a again we have assembled a squad long years and short on fitness and this year we even have own sponsor in the form of that well known sports beverage, Jagermiester.
So watch out for the men in orange (pink is so last year) as we aim once again to set Phuket alight (maybe not literally) on and off the field!
Wanderer's RFC was formed in 1995 and since then has developed into one of Singapore’s leading sporting and social networks.
Founded by a select band of gentlemen rugby players the club has grown substantially in the past 13 years but has remained true to its roots as a place where everyone is welcome regardless of age, gender, race or religion.
We can boast that we have had some considerable success in the local rugby scene during our short history and whilst we don't necessarily have the best players, but we seem to be able to attract like-minded people who can enjoy rugby competitively on the field with a healthy social scene off the field."
DUBAI HURRICANES VETS
Although the Dubai Hurricanes were formed less than 10 years ago we have made significant progress both on & off the pitch. Our male & female teams have gone from strength to strength winning numerous league and cup titles throughout the Gulf. We have a strong tradition of representative rugby with both players & coaches being
recognised at International Level for the Arabian Gulf and beyond.
Undoubtedly one of the most significant successes at Dubai Hurricanes are those of our Vets contingent. Having played in six Dubai 7s, Gulf Vets competitions - we have won 5 of them and lost the 2007 event in the final. Many of the players on show at the Phuket 10s are products of that Vets team. We should be competitive, subject to those confirming - actually attending.
Thank you must go to our sponsors, without whom this tour and our club could not exist. Sabban Properties, Transguard and Quickdubai have been longstanding supporters of Dubai Hurricanes. Thank you. You are our lifeblood.
A man is stood in front of the mirror naked and says to his wife "Darling. When I look in the mirror at myself, I get a hard on.Why is that?". His wife answers "Even your cock thinks you are a c***!".
ASIAN JAPANESE DRAGONS
Asian Dragons consists of the crazy rugby player of the Japanese rugby club in all Asia ( BKK, SIN, SHA,KUL, PEK,JKT,TPE, etc…). Of course, Japanese rugby ( Rugby-Do ) is the Samurai rugby.
We are a captive of the Phuket 10’s. Rugby, Beach, Beer and etc
In this tournament, the black tape on the left arm is the mourning band for Mr.Onishi was the chairman Asian Japanese Rugby Football Cup. He passed away in this march. He was the chairman of Bedok Kings (Singapore) too.
Thank you very much for Phuket Vagabonds, organizer and every participant in the Phuket 10’s !!
STRAY CATS
The Stray Cats' Rugby Club was founded in 1988 in Darwin, Australia, and this year celebrates 21 years of social rugby. Initially created as an Over 35s club, the Stray Cats in more recent years has adoptedplaying members of all ages. This was a necessity as the most of the Club's games were against visiting Australian and American navy ships. (Plaques adorning the walls of The Rugby Shop in Darwin are testament to this). Other matches have involved occasional visits by navy ships fro the U.K., France and New Zealand.
The Stray Cats tour every year in search of exotic locations to ply their trade. These have included Alice Springs, Katherine, Cairns, Groote Eylandt, West Papua, Bali, Bangkok and now Phuket and then on to Capetown in February of 2010.
We now have a regular monthly fixture against the Territory Police social team - the Razorbacks
and any games on top of that are a bonus so with tours such as this we are guaranteed to have at least 15 runs a year.
We enjoy a glass of port before each match and should any of our players transgress on the field the Referee's penalty involves a "send-off" whereby the offending player must consume a beer before he is allowed to return to the field of play.
This tour involves many of the Club's luminaries such as Brutal - the founding father, Baron Brock - the recently retired fullback, Fester - the esteemed barrister, Darth Bader - the visionary, Woodsy - the walking encyclopaedia, Dark Shark - appears after dark, Fitter 'n Turner - a deft hand with things nautical, Chucky - and he will do so!, Fang - puts the bite on in the front row, Big Al - always hunting for the ball, Mic - the forager, Wongy the Winger - aka the interpreter, the pharmacist and the caterer, Stewie - the bagman, Corky - the unplugged, Freddy - fielder of cricket balls, Glucky - the chosen one.
Youngsters on tour and looking for a team with which to play are Junior, Chrisso and Webby. Both Junior and Chrisso have international experience, having toured to Bangkok last year.
The Stray Cats enjoy a Tour!
